Deliberate Acts: SITE Scholar Exhibition 2016-17

“SITE Scholars hands up-and-coming artists a Swiss army knife of tools to navigate the art world,” says Frank Rose, Gallery Director of form & concept. “It’s such a generous program, so we were more than happy to host this year’s exhibition.” The annual show usually takes place at SITE Santa Fe, but the museum is currently undergoing a major expansion that will be completed in fall 2017. form & concept, which is a short walk away from SITE in the Railyard Arts District, will offer the SITE Scholars a new bridge into the gallery world.

Move over, hammer and chisel. NoiseFold’s sculpture installation at form & concept was generated in the digital world, and forged in the legendary glass studio of Dale Chihuly. Transdisciplinary artists Cory Metcalf and David Stout, who collaborate under the name NoiseFold, are known for combining visual art, music and interactive cinema into artworks that manipulate the senses and stretch the imagination. When your painting studio is set adrift on the open sea, things can get a little messy. Philadelphia-based painter Rebecca Rutstein spent her last three artist residencies in close quarters with oceanographic cartographers, examining never-before-seen images of the ocean floor and translating what she learned into undulating, semi-abstract paintings. Santa Fe artist and jeweler Stefani Courtois always had a sketchbook nearby. Inspired by her own imagination and the New Mexico landscape, she incessantly sketched images that would make their way into her powerful artworks.
