Flutist Jesse Tatum and vocalist Tara Khozein join forces for a performance of new compositions in form & concept’s atrium. The New Mexico-based artists met while performing in Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return art installation in summer of 2017. The duo will present a broad and diverse program that combines elegant melodic and textural materials with comedy and absurdity. Tatum, who serves as Principal Flute of the Santa Fe Symphony among other prestigious appointments, will play flute, bass flute and piccolo. Khozein will provide vocals and flex the theater skills that she also employs in her work with the local, experimental troupe Theater Grottesco. “I speak often, there is lots of play of vocal percussion through consonants,” says Khozein. “Jesse plays lots of florid fast things that only woodwinds can do, and uses lots of extended techniques, and we trade off being accompaniment to each other. With this instrumentation, the playing field is so level. We are two melodic slash percussive wind instruments in conversation.”

Tara Khozein and Jesse Tatum first met in an alternate universe. Khozein was dressed from head to toe in black-and-white, with matching makeup covering every inch of exposed skin. Tatum sported a transparent raincoat and fairy makeup, and wielded a flute. They were both solo performers in Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return, for the local art installation’s 2017 Summer in the Multiverse event series, and something instantly clicked between them. “We had a few interactions in character in the exhibition and backstage, and I developed a big artist crush on her,” Khozein explains.

That initial creative attraction blossomed into a full-fledged collaboration, which makes its Santa Fe debut at form & concept on Saturday, July 14 at 7 pm. The New Mexico artists, both sopranos, will perform a new series of duets that combine melodic and percussive instrumentals and vocals. “Art making is social for me,” says Khozein. “I watch other artists in admiration, and then I kind of shyly approach them, the way you’d approach a middle school crush.” In recent years, she has collaborated closely with acclaimed saxophonist Rhonda Taylor and dancer Emmaly Wiederholt. She’ll often approach artists who are interested in reframing classical music for contemporary audiences.

“Seeing Jesse in that raincoat shredding virtuosic music on her flute made me be like, ‘That’s someone I could do an amazing recital with,’” Khozein says. “Later I saw her perform at SITE with David Felberg, and the casual way she connected to the audience was really in line with how I like to perform. I was like, ‘That’s someone who is tearing down the pretension surrounding classical music.’”

Composer and multidisciplinary artist Nathan Wheeler ensnares form & concept in a web of “ghost detection circuits”—also known as EMF meters—for this improvisational music and dance performance. The psychic energy of Wheeler and his spectators will trigger the sensors and influence swirling visuals and soundscapes. Wheeler is a New York-based artist who works at the intersection of sound design, dance, clothing design, video, and interactive programming. He has shown work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, the Denver Art Museum, and at festivals around the globe.

Wheeler isn’t a ghost hunter, though he’s on the trail of something just as ephemeral in his innovative performance artworks. “My work often taps into the supernatural as a source of inspiration and healing,” says the New York-based artist. “What sort of energies do we project, and how can I use technology to make them perceptible?” He tackles that question in a new improvisational performance piece at form & concept, which utilizes EMF detectors and other technology to influence audiovisual aspects of the work. “We’re constantly casting psychic energy into the world. My audience at form & concept will be able to see it and hear it,” Wheeler explains.

Wheeler will perform among the artworks of form & concept’s Inner Orbit group exhibition, which appears in conjunction with the Santa Fe Institute’s Interplanetary Festival and the Currents New Media FestivalHis appearance is part of Futurition Santa Fe, a month long series of festivals and events that brings art, science and technology together.

form & concept has two events lined up for the weekend, and they’re not to be missed! Tonight is the closing reception for Debra Baxter’s solo exhibition Tooth & Nail (Friday, 6/15, 5-7 pm). On Saturday, we’re hosting Nathan Wheeler for an experimental music and performance piece among the artworks of Inner Orbit (Saturday, 6/16, 7-8:30 pm). Alex De Vore of Santa Fe Reporter chose Nathan’s event as a calendar pick this week. Ever heard of an EMF meter? They’re those gadgets that detect electromagnetic fields or, in some cases, psychic energy and possibly ghosts. Spooky, right? But don’t be scared; New York-based multi-disciplinary artist and dancer Nathan Wheeler plans to use them for a non-spooky event.

Wheeler embarks on a communal experience with living people and perhaps with some more ethereal collaborators. One of his chief tools in this process is an instrument that can sense electromagnetic fields (EMFs). “We’ll all be sitting in a space, but basically what I’m doing is using ghost-detection circuits [EMF meters] to read the different sort of invisible energies that are in the space,” said the artist, who is known for his improvisational music and dance performances. “These circuits do things like detect electromagnetic interference and static electricity, but they also are supposed to detect ghosts.”

The result is a 12-track album of stripped-down, jazz-inflected songs that will debut at form & concept on Friday, May 11 from 6 to 9 pm. The ALIVE Album Release Concert is presented by Matron Records, and will feature the first-ever live performance of the new album.

When she attempted to schedule a Santa Fe recording session with a number of far-flung musicians, things got a little too complicated. In lieu of bringing a band together, Mancini traveled across the nation to record with each of her accompanists. The result is a 12-track album of stripped-down, jazz-inflected songs that will debut at form & concept on Friday, May 11 from 6 to 9 pm. The ALIVE Album Release Concert is presented by Matron Records, and will feature the first-ever live performance of the new album.

As PSIRENS, Mancini has built a reputation for her inventive use of layering and loops. She bends vocals and instrumentals into interlinking Möbius strips, building atmospheric compositions that draw the listener into vast electroacoustic landscapes. “It’s easy to pull someone in with a lot of layers, something they can get lost in because it’s a forest of notes,” Mancini says.

For ALIVE, she made a daring shift, pairing live vocals with acoustic instrumentation and subtler looping. “I tried to give what I could for the song’s benefit—and nothing else,” she says. “It’s kind of terrifying, because it really pushes my lyrics to the forefront. For the most part, you hear every word.”

Mancini wrote all of the songs on ALIVE, and contributed vocals, looping and bass guitar. Last summer she traveled to the San Juan Islands in Washington State to record with pianist Grisha Krivchenia on his off-the-grid property. “I would wake up with the sun, hop in the pond to wake up, and we’d record first thing in the morning,” Mancini recalls. “It gave the album this freshness, whereas the rest of the PSIRENS albums are darker and murkier.”

Later, she swung through Boise, Idaho for sessions with harpist Matthew Tutsky and cellist Jake Saunders. In her sometime home of New York City, she recorded additional vocals. Back in Santa Fe, she worked with sound engineer Will Dyer to weave it all together. “It sounds like we’re all in the same room, which is so hard to do,” Mancini says. “It has this jazz-like quality to it that’s really special.”

For the ALIVE Album Release Concert, Mancini will perform among sculptural set pieces of her own creation. The task of uniting all of her collaborators still eludes Mancini, but Krivchenia will accompany her on piano live from the San Juan Islands. CDs of ALIVE will be available for the first time, along with other PSIRENS merchandise. “What’s funny is that it isn’t really a live album, but I had to fight so hard for its existence,” says Mancini. “So it is remarkable that it is alive.”

Santa Fe’s Railyard District has long been a hotbed for contemporary arts, and a new round of high profile ventures is upping the ante. SITE Santa Fe kicked it off with an ambitious renovation and expansion project that debuted last October, while the New Mexico Museum of Art will establish a contemporary art wing at the other end of the district by 2020.

New Mexico School for the Arts is also building new Railyard headquarters, in the former Sanbusco Center building. The arts high school is wasting no time injecting fresh creative energy into the district. NMSA presents a special performance series at form & concept on April 5, May 3 and June 7, 2018 at 6 pm. The events are hosted by NMSA faculty members, and showcase outstanding student musicians, creative writers and poets. Young Masters presages a new era of collaborative, crossdisciplinary arts projects in the Railyard. 

Additional details about the featured student artists for upcoming Young Masters events are forthcoming. Make sure to mark your calendar for Young Masters performances the first Thursday of each month, through the end of the school year.

It starts with a special performance series at form & concept, showcasing outstanding student musicians, creative writers and poets of NMSA. Attend the inaugural performance on Thursday, March 1 at 5 pm, and mark your calendar for Young Masters performances the first Thursday of each month.

The first performance is hosted by NMSA faculty members Kurt Isaacson and Hakim Bellamy. “We would be irresponsible not to build connections with our new neighbors,” says Isaacson, the chair of NMSA’s Music Department. “Galleries and art institutions are the bedrock of the arts and culture economy in the Railyard. They’ll serve as strong foundations and anchors for the new school, and NMSA will in turn fertilize the creative environment in this district.”

Isaacson and Bellamy, NMSA’s Creative Writing Director, were on the hunt for a new venue for readings and performances—somewhere they could showcase contemporary and student-made work. They struck up a conversation with Sandy Zane, an avid supporter of NMSA who owns the Railyard’s form & concept gallery, and she offered up the space for a new event series.

The first performance features a 25-30 minute music program, with configurations including a string quartet, solo cello performance, and vocal performance with string duo accompaniment. Isaacson says the events will have a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, a mission that he hopes will leave its mark on the Railyard. “I want the new campus and the Railyard to be a hub for interdisciplinary work,” he says. “If the vision of the neighborhood is new and contemporary art, then the injection of NMSA into that community is essential. It’s a crossroads for so many art forms.”
