For those familiar with Sam Gilliam’s iconoclastic drape paintings, his equally experimental prints will resonate. The intricately patched-together pieces evoke the airy, multi-dimensional qualities of his sculptural works. These tapestries of jumbled patterns and bright flashes of color are akin to African American “crazy quilts” in their complexity and artful composition. Sam Gilliam is recognized as the most prominent African American color field painter to date, celebrated for his innovative style which has consistently shattered the boundaries of the painterly picture plane.
