Opening Reception: Bhakti Ziek: 5–7 PM

23 February 2024
435 S Guadalupe St

Join us for the opening of A Tenuous Thread, an expansive retrospective that traces master weaver Bhakti Ziek's pioneering approach to textile craft. Presenting a diverse array of textile works by Ziek and her pupils-turned-colleagues, the exhibition weaves an anecdotal account of contemporary fiber art's history with textile tales about the appropriation of fiber craft, how cultural knowledge is shared through material culture, and Ziek's journey to push the conceptual and technical limits of weaving. Celebrate the legacy and influence of one of America's foremost contemporary weavers, fiber arts educators, and authors with a showcase of over fifty years of dedicated fiber study, teaching, and practice.

Ziek's oeuvre presents intimate portraits of personal history that provide approachable entryways into the extensive history of fiber art and conceptual springboards for in-depth conversations about cultural appropriation. This reception includes the presentation of Ziek's personal floor loom, which the artist will use in-gallery to demonstrate her weaving practice every Thursday and Saturday following the exhibition opening.
