Slattery, who moved to Santa Fe two years ago from upstate New York, makes bronze castings of hands in the shapes of “finger guns” as a reaction to incidents in which police have shot and killed civilians whose hands were empty. Though she did not have access to decommissioned gun parts for her work, she is intrigued by the idea of turning something meant for killing into something beautiful, and believes making art about the topic of gun violence can encourage important conversations. “Too many people are dying,” she said. “We need to do something.”
