There is something very special, almost mystical about Ion and Laila Ionescu and their jewelry. When they start talking about their work, the room buzzes with the excitement of inspiration and creativity. T: The New York Times Style Magazine has hailed them as “style-makers,” and they’ve received a number of other accolades and awards, including the first-place AGTA award for “Evening Wear” and the 2014 “Fashion Forward” award among many others. Widely known by top jewelry designers for their incredible craftsmanship and broad range of capabilities, they now have their own body of work available in two collections: “Ionescu Jewels” and “Laila Lore”. Ion Ionescu studied the craft of jewelry making in Romania with master-jewelers trained in the classical methods of metal smithing. In 1988 Laila was collaborating with Ion in New York when they discovered they were from the same town in Romania. They fell in love and have been creating spectacular jewelry for more than two decades. They work together on common projects as well as individually on personal pieces. They are both inspired by myth, memory and the magic in any given moment. They see the creative process as a portal to a higher consciousness and love working in that “creative space”. Every piece that they create has it’s own special story. Laila, who is also a sculptor with degrees in fine art from Hunter College and Pratt Institute, has, in addition to her jewelry, a suite of functional micaceous pieces that are innovative and truly humorous. Ion is renowned for the luxury pieces he creates for the couple’s Ionescu Jewels Collection. He works mainly with 18 and 22 karat gold, platinum, high quality pearls and a multitude of precious and semi-precious gems. He often uses unusual stones of the highest grade in unorthodox color combinations and bold sizes. He also combines precious stones with unexpected elements for impact and surprise.
